Here are a few methodical and effective points in order to succeed in your communication with the media.

The 10 commandments for a good communication with the media

Communicating with the Press is a work of continuity if we want to obtain satisfactory results. How can we effectively capture the attention of journalists? Here are a few tips: 

  1. Identify target journalists to ensure that the subject of your Press Release will be of interest to them. 

  2. Design an eye-catching press release with a neat style and no spelling mistakes. The message must be clear in order to capture the interest of the journalist who receives a lot of communication material. 

  3. Personalise the press release e-mail according to the journalist you contact. This makes it possible to build a relationship with the journalist and to pitch your story to him and explain personally why your communication is relevant to everyone.  

  4. Be available to journalists and ready to answer their questions, requests for visuals or additional information. 

  5. Facilitate the work of journalists by sharing newsworthy content that they would like to cover.

  6. Be proactive and anticipate the next topics sought by the media in order to be able to provide them with relevant information that matches. Listen to them without drowning them out with a lot of press notes. 

  7. Establish authentic and solid relationships with journalists by being accessible as soon as they ask for it and not only when you want a publication. 

  8. Follow up in all subtlety: call them to find out if they have received your communication but without insisting. 

  9. Respect deadlines and avoid sending information at the last minute to encourage them to publish. 
  10. Build good long-term relationships with journalists: this will increase publication opportunities. Another way to maintain contact is to communicate with them on their social networks for example. 

And above all, don’t be too greedy and demanding. We all want to be on the front page, but you have to appreciate every publication. Be thankful and patient, communication is a long-term job!

The press release remains the preferred tool for journalists. You have some news to communicate and therefore you plan to write a Press release?  Before you dive into writing, here are a few tips on journalistic language to be aware of.

1-Identify your goals and target

  2. What news do I want to highlight ?
  3. What type of media do you wish to target ?
  4. Take into account the closing dates and editorial forecasts.
2-Find an angle that will interest the  journalist
  1. Each subject could be treated from different angles.
  2. The journalist writes first and foremost for his readers.
  3. This angle will remain your guiding thread for the entire press release.

A successful press dossier

The press dossier must be created in addition to the press release. Unlike the latter, which should preferably be on a single page with a single piece of information, the press dossier should be about fifteen pages long. It must be sufficiently detailed so that journalists can find all the necessary information on the brand’s universe.
